2012 FIL-AM SCHOLARSHIP

Those who were awarded are as follows:

 

1. The recipient of $1,000 scholarship is MAYA ESPIRITU. Maya was born in 1994 from a full Filipino father in the name of Abraham Espiritu. She is class valedictorian - rated no. 1 among the 755 graduating students of El Camino High School. She is a consistent honor student - a National Merit Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, Cox Cares Scholar and recipients of James E. Scripps Scholarship and Women Marines Association Scholarship
She has a weighted average of 4.6 from grades 9-12. She was voted in the Class of 2012 as "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Most Intelligent".
She is also the President of Asian Pacific Student Union of El Camino High School and was in the National Honor Society among other numerous extra-curricular activities that she is involved with.

She is very active in the community. Among her services are she was a volunteer for Caesar Chavez Community Tribute where she bagged and distributed food to over 100 needy families, counselor for Children's House of Oceanside summer camp, coach of Soccer Club of Oceanside, and many others.

She would like to take pre-medicine course at Scripps College!

2. Recipient of $500 cash scholarship is NICHOLAS R. VILLEMEZ - Nicholas is a senior student from Valley Center High School (VCHS). He is a Roadrunner Academic Scholar, NROTC scholar and a Pauma scholar. He will pursue BS Economics in U.S. Naval Academy. He received Letter of Assurance from United States Naval Academy guaranteeing an offer of appointment if received medical clearance and also a Congressional nomination from Representative Darrel Issa to United States Naval Academy.

Among numerous school and outside club memberships and activities he had are Boy Scouts of America, school's Nine-Time tutoring program, Breakfast Club, etc. He is also very active in sports like football, wrestling, track and field and varsity cheerleading and varsity track and field. He was also involved in hip-hop dance club, ballroom dancing, club rugby, gymnastics and cheerleading.

3. Recipient of $300 cash scholarship is KARINA D. DEPIANO - Karina is a resident of Carlsbad and her mom is a Filipina. She goes to Cathedral Catholic High School. She is an AP Scholar with Honor and consistently in the National Honor Society.

She just won first place in the North San Diego's Music Teacher's Association of California (MTAC) Senior Scholarship Audition. She had done numerous musical performances and even went into songwriting workshop.

She used her talent to teach piano and tutor in the San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club. She also loves volleyball where she became the school's Most Valuable Player in 2009 and Team Captain of Solana Beach Volleyball Club.

She wants to go to University of Southern California (USC) this fall to pursue a B.S. degree in Piano Performance.

Way to go Karina! We hope to watch your piano concert someday!



4. Recipient of $100 cash scholarship is KELSEY C. KELLER -
Kelsey was born in 1994 in San Francisco, California from a Filipino mother. She graduated from Carlsbad High School. She is also an AP Scholar and a Gold Star Performer. She is also the President of the school's Spanish Club. She also served as President of Children's Relief Coalition. She also tutors and dances. She is also involved with summer reading program.

She wants to take a Bachelor's degree in Accounting at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

5. Recipient of $100 cash scholarship is DONALD W. BUCKLEY -Donald is a senior high school of Mission Hills High School. He is a Cardinal Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. He is a member and became President of California Scholarship Federation. He won the Freshman of the Year Award in 2009-2010.

He is also involved with Mission Hills High Marching Band Cardinal Alliance. He is a Drum Major of the Cardinal Alliance Marching Band. He plays saxophone for the Choir of the St. Mark's Catholic and Apostolic Church.

He wants to go to Palomar College to obtain Associates Degree in Biochemistry.
